We typically make our own lip balm here on Jenni Raincloud but I have wanted to recreate a cult classic lip product that I bet you might remember! Instead of a balm, I’m going to share with you an easy DIY lip oil in a roller bottle recipe that will deliver nostalgia and the memory of youth with every swipe!! And if you don’t remember the famous 80’s lip oil-Lip Potion, you will still want to make your own homemade lip oil to nourish dry lips naturally!

If you’re a child of the 80’s then you’ll most likely remember Lip Potion, Kissing Potion, Kissing Stick and Lip Licking Balm. I used to beg my mom for these fun lip products every time she would drag me grocery shopping! Give me some Kissing Potion, a Teen Magazine and a Flowers in the Attic paperback and I would’ve been one very happy (and weird) little kid! To tell you the truth, V.C. Andrew paperback novels, kitschy lip glosses and magazines still make for a very fun afternoon!
My mother wouldn’t let me get Kissing Potion or Flowers in the Attic but I had every flavor that came in those cute little tins and glass roll ons as long as they didn’t have “Kissing” in their name!
The original Lip Potion is by Maybelline but a new company has reformulated it and continues to sell it and their version is actually quite natural and safe so it’s up to you to DIY or Buy Lip Potion!
I was excited to find a place online that offers all these products HERE and pleasantly surprised that they are very natural and extremely easy to recreate!
This DIY lip oil is a great recipe and has turned out to be a fantastic natural moisturizer for the lips.
Castor oil is added to lip oils and glosses because it gives a good shine. Together with the very nourishing sweet almond oil and vitamin E, it is a lip smoothing must.
The bubblegum flavor is what you use when making candy. While this oil smells like bubblegum, it does not have a sweet taste. I didn’t try it but you could probably add some kind of sugar additive like stevia. I can’t remember if the original roll ons were sweet.
What’s the Difference Between Lip Oil, Lip Gloss and Lip Balm?
In the world of making your own beauty products, not all lip DIYs are created equal. In my opinion, a lip balm, lip gloss and lip oil are all worthy DIYs, however one is more nurturing, one is more for looks and one does a little of both.
I have many homemade lip balm recipes and make several of them over and over. I always keep lip balm next to my bed to combat dry lips during the cold weather months. Lip balm ingredients include butters like cocoa butter, coconut oil, shea butter, kokum butter and mango butter. They have a wax base of beeswax or candelilla wax. They are a solid, balm-like consistency and typically stay on the lips longer than a natural lip gloss or lip oil.
A homemade lip gloss recipe has a liquid consistency but tends to be sticky and shiny. Adding mica powder or beet root can provide sheer colors to your gloss. Lip glosses are typically used for looks rather than nourishment. Depending on the recipe, a lip balm can either be water based or oil based.
A natural lip oil has similar properties to a lip gloss. It requires a liquid carrier oil like olive oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil, grapeseed oil etc. Lip oils take a couple of minutes to make and is always a simple recipe.
Your favorite essential oils can be added to all 3 variations of lip treatments.
All of these lip products result in soft lips and can easily be made at home with high quality natural ingredients.
Why Make Your Own Lip Oil?
If you are already making your own personal care products, you most likely have all the ingredients you need to make DIY lip oil! The key ingredients in any lip oil recipe are natural oils. Unlike a diy lip balm recipe, there is no heat required.
Another good reason to make lip oil is that they are not sticky like lip gloss.
DIY lip oil is the best of both worlds. It’s moisturizing like a lip balm but gives you the shine of a lip gloss!
How Do You Make Homemade Lip Oil?
Making a lip oil is simple. It is as easy as adding oils to a glass roller ball container or lip gloss tube, replacing the cap and enjoying! The hardest part is selecting which pure oils you want to use and I’ve done that for you!
Which Oil is Best for Lips?
In my opinion, the best oil to use for nourishing the lips is almond oil. A close second is jojoba oil. Both are gentle yet extremely moisturizing.
You can use any oil you already have but I would highly recommend adding castor oil for it’s sheen and thickness.
What Are the Ingredients to a Good Lip Oil?
Castor oil is my go-to when it comes to lip glosses and lip oils because it is thicker than most oils and delivers a lovely sheen on the lips.
Sweet Almond Oil is gentle yet nourishing. It’s an easy to find oil but you could choose any other oil you have on hand. I always have it on hand for dry skin recipes. It contains Vitamins A, E and K, as well as has anti-inflammatory properties.
Vitamin E has powerful antioxidant properties and will also help prolong the shelf life of your lip oil! It is a common ingredient in anti aging skin care and can help reduce fine lines and smooth and plump the lips!
I used flavoring for my lip oil in order to recreate Lip Potion but you could use pure essential oils to flavor yours if you’d prefer. Peppermint oil is an easy way to give your lip oil a lovely, cooling boost!
How Do You Make Homemade Tinted Lip Oil?
Tinted lip oil can be made by adding a small amount of cosmetic grade mica powder. I would add 1/8 of a teaspoon to start. You’ll want to make sure the mica you use will mix well into the oil. Beet root powder is an option however, it usually turns out to be gritty.

DIY Lip Oil-Bubble Gum Flavored!
Yield: 10 ml roll on bottle Prep Time: 3 minutes Total Time: 3 minutes
This is an easy DIY lip oil in a roller bottle recipe that will deliver nostalgia and the memory of youth with every swipe!! And if you don't remember the famous 80's lip oil-Lip Potion, you will still want to make your own homemade lip oil to nourish dry lips naturally!
Materials
- 1 tsp. Castor Oil
- 1/2 tsp. Sweet Almond Oil
- 1/2 tsp. Vitamin E Oil
- 10 drops Bubblegum Flavor *optional
Tools
- 10 ml roll on bottle
- Small Funnel
Instructions
- Use a small funnel and add all ingredients into a 10 ml roll on bottle.
- Replace the lid and shake.
- Roll over the lips as often as needed!
Notes
It might be a good idea to patch test your new lip oil on the inside of your arm to ensure no allergic reaction! It's not common but sometimes essential oils can irritate the skin and the lips can be extra sensitive.

Pro Tip: Use a homemade lip scrub weekly to keep lips smooth and nourished. Your lip products will work better when dead skin is gently removed first.

Flavoring Your Lip Oil:
I used bubblegum flavor in my lip oil and love it! You can go HERE to find lots of other flavor options. Remember a little goes a long way.
You can also use vanilla extract or even dissolve sugar. I have a natural lip balm recipe that uses sugar and vanilla to give you an idea of how much you might want to add.
Essential oils will also give your lip oil a scent and they are more natural and beneficial.
Does this DIY Lip Oil Need a Preservative?
The answer is no! There are only oil based ingredients used in this recipe so the shelf life should be around 6 months. If we were to add a water based ingredient then we would need to use a preservative. Plus, Vitamin E is a natural preservative that will help keep your lip oil fresh!
How to Thicken Lip Oil
If you feel that your lip oil is too thin in consistency, you can add more castor oil and/or replace sweet almond oil with jojoba oil which is actually considered a liquid wax!
This was a fun and easy recreation of a cult classic! Plus, having an 13 year old going on 16, she had fun helping me and loves the finished product and label! She’s dying for me to finish this post so she can take the DIY Lip Potion to school! We even made a big batch to hand out as party favors for her birthday!
