When it comes to DIY skin care, making your own lip balm is a no fail product. You seriously can make DIY lip balms just as effective and fun as a store bought lip balm! All you need is a little beeswax, oil and some creativity! Today I wanted to share a recipe for a super yummy, yet nourishing DIY mint chocolate lip balm! This lip balm is no joke. It truly smells like mint chocolate chip! So good yet so natural! Let’s jump right in!
What is Cocoa Butter?
Cocoa butter comes from the cacao bean, which is found inside the cocoa pod, which grows on the cacao tree. That sounds like a children’s book! The fat is extracted from the seeds and is called cocoa butter. Cocoa butter is a hard butter that has a low melting point and a very long shelf life of around two to five years.
It is a very effective rich moisturizer and contains a large amount of antioxidants so it is also known for anti aging powers. Cocoa butter has been known for decades for preventing and healing scaring and stretch marks-i.e. the famous Palmer’s Cocoa Butter!
Cocoa butter is excellent in lip sticks and lip balms. It can even be whipped into a creamier consistency. I love using it in other DIYs such as my oil cleansing cleanser recipe and my almond cocoa body lotion recipe. I also included in my recipe for eczema relief cream.
Ingredients for Making Mint Chocolate Lip Balm
You need an oil that has no scent. I chose grapeseed oil but sweet almond oil, apricot seed oil, safflower oil, refined coconut oil or MCT (fractionated coconut oil) would also work.
Cocoa Butter is where the chocolate smell comes from. It typically comes in block form but I have linked cocoa butter wafers which are much easier to work with.
Beeswax is what thickens up the butter and oils and also acts as a protective barrier for the lips. Read more about beeswax benefits for skin HERE.
Peppermint essential oil gives the mint scent and also provides a cooling sensation when applied.
