DIY Vitamin C Rice Bran Cleansing Grains

I’m crazy about cleansing grains! Ever since I used 100 Percent Pure’s powdered skin care, I’ve loved taking a break from the oil cleansing method and enjoy a little exfoliation during cleansing! Today I’m sharing a DIY Vitamin C and Rice Bran Cleansing Grain recipe. It’s a fantastic product that I couldn’t be happier with. It’s effective at removing makeup but it also is brightening and calming at the same time! Did I mention it’s so easy to make and since no water is added until you use it, there’s no fear of contamination!

A few weeks ago I posted a recipe for cleansing grains that is very similar to this recipe except that I decided to add vitamin C powder and rice bran powder-2 very powerful ingredients that will improve the appearance of skin as well as aid in a more thorough cleanse. I also used different dried herbs in this recipe for more inflammation reduction.

Skin Benefits of Vitamin C:

In my opinion, vitamin C should be included in everyone’s anti aging arsenal. Not only is it safe for prolonged use, it has the cabiltity to fade hyperpigmentation, smooth and brighten the skin and encourage natural collagen production. After regular use, the majority of women notice significant improvements in the overall appearance of their skin.

Vitamin C is very unstable when it is added to water so it makes perfect sense to add it to a dry ingredient recipe so it’s fresh every single time!

Skin Benefits of Rice Bran:

Rice bran contains a good amount of B & E vitamins, minerals and protein. It is moisturizing and reduces inflammation. Rice Bran is high in antioxidants making it great for anti aging. It is healing and encourages healthy cell production. It is easily tolerated for all skin types and can be helpful for healing and calming acne.

Rice bran also contains ferulic acid which is a powerful antioxidant, especially when combined with vitamin C & E. Ferulic acid also protects the skin against sun damage.

Benefits of Chamomile & Calendula:

I added both these herbs because I had them on hand. You don’t have to use dried herbs in this DIY for it to work however I recommend it. Both are fantastic for reducing inflammation and redness. Chamomile and Calendula are calming and healing.

Both these herbs come in powder form from Mountain Rose Herbs but I don’t recommend that. If you ever want to infuse oil with these herbs, the powder won’t work. In fact, check out how easy it is (and beneficial) to make a Chamomile Infused Oil or a Calendula Eye Balm.

Benefits of Kaolin Clay:

Kaolin clay is one of the gentlest clays you can use. It is detoxing without drying. Clays have a pulling action which purges the pores. They are fantastic in cleansing grains as well as masks.

You don’t have to stick with Kaolin Clay if you have another clay on hand. However, I have tried Bentonite Clay from Mountain Rose Herbs and I found that that particular clay does not mix well and tends to ball up when wet. I intend to try another brand to see if there’s any difference. Be aware that bentonite clay is not nearly as gentle as Kaolin and can be very drying.

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate:

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate is a coconut based, powdered, foaming surfectant. It is sulphate-free, gentle and biodegradable. It contains no additives, preservatives or colorantes surfactant. It is gentle on the skin and helps to remove dirt an impurities.

  • 1 TBSP. Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (find it HERE)
  • 4 TBSP. dried Calendula & Chamomile (find HERE & HERE)
  • 2 TBSP. Kaolin Clay (find it HERE)
  • 2 TBSP. Rice Bran Powder (find it HERE)
  • 1 TBSP. Vitamin C Powder (find it HERE)

Directions:

  1. Add dried herbs to a coffee grinder and grind into a powder.
  2. I add clay and rice bran as well because the more I put on top of the herbs, the more powdery the coffee grinder can make the herbs. You could add all your ingredients if they will fit. This will ensure they will be mixed thoroughly.
  3. Using a small funnel, add your powder mixture and the rest of the ingredients (if you did not add them to your grinder as well).

**I have not tried to use my blender or a Magic Bullet to mix and grind all the ingredients, but they might be great alternatives to a coffee grinder. It would be worth a try.

This recipe makes about 4 ounces. I used a glass 4 ounce bottle to store mine. I’ve found this makes it easy to pour into my hand when it’s time to cleanse.

DIY Vitamin C Cleansing Grains

DIY cleansing grains are a fantastic way to cleanse your skin. I still love oil cleansing and feel that it is the best way to cleanse your skin if you suffer from dry skin but cleansing grains are detoxing, exfoliating and brightening. With an extra dose of vitamin C, your skin will benefit from extra smoothing, more collagen production and less visible sun spots!
