DIY Eye Makeup Remover

One of the best kept secrets in the natural beauty world is that oil is the absolute best way to remove eye makeup. It’s gentle, it’s thorough, nourishing and works for all skin types. It literally dissolves mascara and eye liner in an instant, even waterproof mascara! That’s good news right? Yes, but there’s more!

Why Make a Homemade Eye Makeup Remover?

Store-bought makeup removers are generally watery. Typically they either require you to use a lot of cleanser to remove eye makeup or they don’t require much but are filled with harmful substances that breakdown eye makeup while weakening your lashes and spreading toxic ingredients in and around your eyes. On top of all that, the eyes are sensitive and using a soap based product around them can cause discomfort and even damage.

The fact that oil dissolves eye makeup is pretty exciting if you’ve ever spent good money on an eye makeup remover in addition to a facial cleanser. I view eye makeup remover products as a gimmick. It’s marketed to women that believe they must have every product available in order to have beautiful skin. It’s another load of bull the beauty industry is dishing.

This homemade eye makeup remover is so incredibly easy. In fact, if you want, just scoop out a dollop of coconut oil or even olive oil tonight when you are cleansing your face. You’ll see how good it feels to your eyes as well as how gentle it removes even waterproof eye makeup! Just follow up with your regular facial cleanser and you’re makeup free! It’s literally that simple.

FYI: While baby oil is remarkably efficient at removing eye makeup, I do not recommend using this product at all. It contains mineral oil which is an unnatural, pore clogging ingredient that I avoid at all costs.

DIY Eye Makeup Remover Ingredients:

For this DIY I’m going to use good ole’ unrefined coconut oil. Let me explain why. First off, did you know that 50% of us have eye lash mites?  Also, the leading cause of short, thin, brittle lashes is under nourished hair. The 2nd leading cause is actually mites. The good news with mites is that studies have shown that you can easily get rid of them by using tea tree essential oil.

Coconut oil is anti parasitic, anti fungal and according to several sources-beneficial for hair loss. Coconut oil helps with eyelash detox while acting as a hair conditioner. It is high in vitamin E and fatty acids which help to nourish hair.

Castor oil is known to help with growth and for good measure I always would add it in hair recipes but the real secret is nourishment.

As an optional ingredient-you can add lavender and/or tea tree essential oil. This would be incredibly helpful if you suspect you might have eye lash mites. Remember to only add a tiny amount of essential oils-they will burn the eyes.

Lash Health:

Using a nourishing , natural oils on the eyes is excellent for eyelash health. Eyelash health is so important if you want long, thick lashes that are strong.

Nourish and detox your lashes and they will get healthier.  Healthy lashes equals longer, thicker lashes. There’s no magic.

There are a lot of DIY eyelash serums floating around the internet! Many of these serum posts come with a long line of comments from women and men that have made a serum and seen awesome results. Homemade eyelash serums are one of the simplest DIYs you can make. They typically incorporate a gentle nourishing oil and castor oil and that’s it.

How to Use:

  1. Scoop a dime sized amount of makeup remover and gently rub your eyes in circular motions. Your eye makeup will begin to melt.
  2. Once your eye makeup is off your eyes and all over your face you can continue with your regular face wash to remove the rest of your makeup as well as the eye makeup and oil.

However, there is an easier way-you can use this DIY to wash your entire face! If you’ve never tried cleansing with oil, you’ll be shocked at how well it works.

Like Dissolves Like. Oil Dissolves Oil. This means that the oil cleansing method is good for even oily skin. In fact, my skin is never clearer than when I consistently oil cleanse.

How I Use My Eye Makeup Remover:

I rub my entire face with the eye makeup remover, massaging as I go. Then I place a warm/hot washcloth over my face, allow it to cool then gently wipe away the makeup and excess oil. Often times I repeat the hot washcloth to make sure I have removed every bit of makeup thoroughly.

I follow up with a toner, serum and face oil.

Recipe Substitutes:

Coconut oil can be somewhat comedogenic which means it has the potential to clog pores if you have acne-prone skin. If this is a concern, you can still make this recipe but with another carrier oil.

If you’d like to nix the coconut oil, you can use other oils such as hemp seed oil, sacha inchi or hazelnut oil. These 3 oils are non comedogenic and less oily. Sweet almond oil, jojoba oil and grapeseed oil are also good choices but not 100% non comedogenic. However, since these oils are not solid like coconut oil, you will need to use a 2 ounce glass pump bottle.

I do not recommend using a cotton ball or cotton pad around the eyes. Fingers are much gentler and the gentle use of a wet wash cloth is much more thorough.

Is a Preservative Necessary for this Recipe?

Because this recipe only calls for oil based ingredients, a preservative is not necessary!

Many diy eye makeup remover recipes contain water based ingredients. Products that contain water based ingredients such as aloe vera, castile soap, witch hazel and rose water always need a preservative and if you don’t use one or use one improperly, bacteria and mold will spread within 1-2 weeks. When using products around the delicate eye area, bacteria is the last thing you want to use!

Be sure not to dip dirty or wet fingers into your diy eye makeup remover. This is a sneaky way to accidentally contaminate your product!

This eye makeup remover recipe shelf life is 6 months.

Making your own natural eye makeup remover is a smart way to nurture your lashes and up your beauty routine game.
