The Dry Mermaid Mask for Oily/Acne Skin…

Dry Seaweed Spirulina Facial Mask

As promised, I’m back with 3 dry mask recipes, perfect for your DIY holiday gifts!  However, these masks turned out so good, they each deserved their own post!  So today, we’ll start with a mask perfect for oily skin and/or acne.

If you’re not sure what a dry mask is, let me break it down.  Basically a dry mask is a ground mixture of dry ingredients.  When you are ready to apply a mask, simply scoop about a tbsp. of the dry mask, add water to make a paste and apply to your skin.  The great thing about this DIY is that it stays potent and fresh.  Water or a liquid such as aloe vera or hydrosol will actually activate your dry ingredients, giving your skin a powerful treatment with no risk of contamination or ineffectiveness due to expiring.

I love making DIYs for friends because not only is it a reflection of who I am, it is also a handmade gift I took a special effort to make just for them.

Last week I outlined dry ingredient options HERE.  The great thing about this DIY is that you can get as creative as you want, or as simple as you want!  Choose the appropriate ingredients, ground up the non-powdered ones like herbs, salt or oatmeal and mix together!

DIY Dry Mask for Oily/Acne Skin-

  • 1 tsp. Activated Charcoal (find it HERE)
  • 3 tbsp. French Green Clay (find it HERE)
  • 1 tsp. Lavender Buds (find it HERE)
  • 2 tbsp. Spirulina (find it HERE)
  • 2 tbsp. Seaweed (find it HERE)
  • 1 tsp. Dead Sea Salt (find it HERE)

Mix activated charcoal, french green clay, spirulina and seaweed in a jar.  In a blender or coffee grinder, grind sea salt and lavender buds to a fine powder and mix with other ingredients.  Shake well.

To Use:

  1. Scoop a tablespoon of powder and add just enough liquid to create a spreadable paste.
  2. Apply a thick layer to clean skin.
  3. Leave on 10-15 minutes.
  4. Rinse with cool water.
  5. Apply toner and moisturizer.

If you are making this mask for a loved one, I suggest THESE flip top containers.  I tied a simple ribbon and added a sprig of pine from my yard.  You could also add a wooden spoon or a mask brush!  To go above and beyond, a card with the ingredient list and directions could also be attached to the ribbon.

DIY Mermaid Mask

I love this mask.  It has so many elements of the sea included so that’s why I call it the Mermaid Mask!  It’s not vital that you have to have oily skin to use this mask but if you aren’t oily, don’t let the mask dry.  This is when the mask could zap oil from your pores.  In fact, go HERE to read more about properly applying clays masks.

I think dry masks make the perfect gifts since there is no need to worry about a preservative since there is no liquid added!  Also, the shelf life of dry masks is about 6 mos.

Stay tuned for more dry masks suited for sensitive, dry and aging skin coming this week!!

xx, Jenni
