Summer is here and my favorite season to dish out the DIYs! My favorite, most used and most effective DIYs are summer related including today’s recipe-DIY SPF lip balm! Lips should not be forgotten when you’re in the sun or harsh elements. They are extra sensitive and are prone to damage if not protected. Luckily, it’s very simple to protect the lips naturally!
Lips are one of the most delicate places on our body! They should always be protected and cared for, especially in the sun.
Making a lip balm with sun protection is so easy because the carrier oil, red raspberry seed actually absorbs UVA and UVB, naturally!
Beeswax forms a barrier over the lips which also aids in protecting the lips from the elements.
Adding in vitamin E, a sliver of lipstick, vanilla oil and peppermint are just fun bonuses to nourish and beautify your lips! They help make this recipe super fun and special!
What’s great about this lip balm is that it can protect and sooth your skin from not only the sun but also the wind. Plus, it’s velvety, buttery texture feels so good and it restores the youthful look of lips thanks to red raspberry seed oil! Read below for all this amazing oil’s benefits!
I’ve made a list of my top products for protecting the skin during the summer and I must say, this lip balm definitely should be on it!
If you’ve never made a diy lip balm, don’t worry! It’s one of the easiest skin care products you can make and the perfect recipe to get you started!
You’ll never buy commercial lip balm again after making your own!

I decided to give my lip balm a little hint of color by adding a sliver of lipstick. You don’t have to do this but it’s a fun way to use up lipsticks that are too dark or not flattering.

Did you make this recipe?
Red Raspberry Seed Oil Benefits:
- SPF of 28-50
- High in vitamins A & E
- High in antioxidants
- Heals damaged skin cells
- Improves Elasticity
- Reduces fine lines
- Moisturizes & softens
- Non comedogenic
- High levels of phytosterosis-reduces transepidermal water loss, helping skin retain hydration and moisture
Red raspberry seed oil contains a high amount of antioxidants and essential fatty acids like alpha-linoleic acid.
I also have an easy recipe for sun tan oil that utilizes several oils with SPF but mainly red raspberry leaf oil.
A Word of Caution:
There isn’t much data on whether red raspberry leaf oil’s SPF will actually protect the skin enough. So, to state the obvious, take caution while in the sun.
I do not buy that the sun should be avoided at all cost and that you should always wear SPF. However, I do believe that the sun should be respected, especially when the face is exposed.
I try to get a small amount of sun without SPF daily because of the many benefits! The sun is free medicine! That being said, a sun burn is never good. Over exposure can happen quickly and the lips are even more prone to damage than your skin.
Because we are diluting it with vitamin E and beeswax, the SPF will be a bit lower. If you are going to be in the sun for a prolonged amount of time, I would reapply your lip balm as often as you reapply your sunscreen.
Oh, and one more thing-Raspberry oil doesn’t smell like raspberries, unfortunately. I’m not too sure how you could add in the smell. I just made a raspberry cake this weekend using a white cake mix and raspberry flavored gelatin so this might be an option. There is major red dye in it so I opted not to try it. UPDATE: I made a raspberry lip balm using freeze dried raspberries and it turned out amazing and it tastes so gooooood!
If you do happen to get a sun burn, check out my recipe for after sun oil or sunburn relief cream. Sun burnt skin needs lots of replenishing from the outside in and the inside out. Be sure to drink lots of water on top of slathering on the moisture!

I hope you enjoy making diy lip balms as much as I do!
Happy sunning!
