DIY Dry Sensitive Skin Face Mask w/ Chamomile & Oatmeal

Dry Sensitive Skin Mask

If you suffer from eczema, psoriasis, rashes or just have sensitive skin in general then this DIY mask is for you.  Calming inflammation is the key to sensitive skin.  Inflammation is the cause of red, puffy, angry skin.  Using oatmeal and chamomile goes a long way when it comes to healing and calming so let’s make a DIY Dry Sensitive Skin Face Mask w/ Chamomile & Oatmeal that you can use to give your skin the much needed hydration and healing it needs!

First off, let me explain exactly what a dry mask is and why you’ll want to make one.  Basically a dry mask is a powder mixture of dry ingredients.  When you are ready to apply a mask, simply scoop about a tbsp. of the dry mask, add water to make a paste and apply to your skin.  The great thing about this DIY is that it stays potent and fresh.  Water or a liquid such as aloe vera or hydrosol will actually activate your dry ingredients, giving your skin a powerful treatment with no risk of contamination or ineffectiveness due to expiring.

Last week I listed options of dry ingredients HERE.  My favorite thing about dry masks is that the options are endless not to mention, they couldn’t be easier to make!  Choose the appropriate ingredients, ground up the non-powdered ones like herbs, salt or oatmeal and mix together!  You really can’t go wrong.

DIY Dry Sensitive Skin Face Mask w/ Chamomile & Oatmeal

  • 3 tbsp. Organic Oatmeal (find it HERE)
  • 1 tbsp. Chamomile flowers (find it HERE)
  • 3 tbsp. White Cosmetic Clay (find it HERE)

You will need to grind your oatmeal and chamomile flowers in a food processor or blender.  Be sure to grind them into a fine powder.  Add White Cosmetic Clay (a.k.a kaolin clay) to the ground powder and mix thoroughly.

To Use:

  1. Scoop a tablespoon of powder and add just enough liquid to create a spreadable paste.
  2. Apply a thick layer to clean skin.
  3. Leave on 10-15 minutes.
  4. Rinse with cool water.
  5. Apply toner and moisturizer.

If you are making this mask for a loved one, I suggest THESE flip top containers.  I tied a simple ribbon and added a sprig of pine from my yard.  Pine cones, sticks and leaves could also be used!   You could also add a wooden spoon or a mask brush!  To go above and beyond, a card with the ingredient list and directions could also be attached to the ribbon.

I think dry masks make the perfect gifts since there is no need to worry about a preservative since there is no liquid added!  Also, the shelf life of dry masks is about 6 mos.

DIY Chamomile Oatmeal Dry Mask

This mask is perfect for sensitive skin.  Oatmeal is a powerful redness and puffiness reducer.  It also relieves and soothes itchy skin, rashes and sunburns.  On top of being incredibly calming, it also hydrates.  Chamomile is the GO-TO herb or essential oil for sensitive skin.  It is basically oatmeal on steroids.  Kaolin Clay is a great detoxer without being harsh on the skin or stripping the skin of much needed hydration.

I highly recommend using pure aloe vera gel as the liquid you use to make this dry mask into a paste.  Aloe is also very calming and healing to all skin types.  For added calming, you could add a couple drops of lavender essential oil once you’ve mixed it with a liquid.

In case you missed it, I created 2 other dry masks perfect for holiday gifts.  Find them HERE and HERE.

Creating dry masks has been fun and easy and I can’t wait to give these products to my friends!  Oh and I also had an idea about the next dry mask-why not put L. ascorbic acid (vitamin C) powder in one?  Since vitamin C becomes very unstable once it is mixed with a liquid, it makes perfect sense to add it to a “just add water” mask recipe!  I’m not exactly sure how much would be appropriate so let me do some research and I’ll get back to you.

I hope you enjoyed making dry masks as much as I have!  What DIYs are you making for gifts this season?  Please share!

xx, Jenni
