The Do’s & Don’ts of Oily Skin

Oily skin

Earlier in the week we talked about Marula Oil.  I revealed that I’ve had a major hormone issue and experienced some major skin problems!  You could say I involuntarily took one for the team!  I had oily/acneic skin growing up but since the birth of my first daughter, my skin has evened out.

I seriously forgot what it was like to deal with oily and blemished skin.  I know the facts about oily skin-I know how to ease the issue because I’ve done my research and been educated but to experience it again, first hand has given me a whole new perspective.

For you all that are oily-I GET IT.

On the bright side-oily skin produces more collagen then dry skin.  Plus, oily skin helps ease the effects of gravity-a.k.a wrinkles.  Oily skin ages much slower then dry, parched skin.  Wrinkles just aren’t as obvious!  So, that being said-let’s talk about easing this skin condition.

Read THIS article on oily skin for a more in-depth post on the 8 causes of oily skin.

Hidden causes of Oily Skin:

  • Using harsh skin care products
  • Too much or too rough exfoliating
  • Hormone issues
  • Tanning-beds or sun
  • Stress
  • Medications
  • Season Changes
  • Genetics

3 Tips to Control Oily and Acne

1.Use a Gentle Cleanser and only Cleanse 2x a Day!

Producing oil is your bodies way of protecting the skin.  When the skin feels like it has been stripped or damaged, it will over produce oil.

So many products for oily/acneic skin are meant to kill bacteria, but in the process, they strip the skin of it’s natural oils.  As you can see, it’s a vicious cycle!  The more broken out and oily you are, the more products you use to combat the situation.  The more products, the more oil!

My first inclination with my new oily skin was to wash my face, like hourly.  I realized this is such a common mistake oily people make.  Over cleansing or using harsh and drying chemicals alert your skin to produce more oil!

The solution is to find a gentle, pH balanced cleanser.  Cleanse your skin thoroughly morning and night and that’s it!

I have recently run out of my Probiotic Cleanser so I decided trying out Juice Beauty’s Blemish Clearing Cleanser.  So far, it’s great.  Very mild, but cleanses very well.  It even removes my eye make up and doesn’t burn!

Many people have found great success with The Oil Cleansing Method because it controls the oil production and is so gentle on the skin.  Read more about that HERE and HERE.

2. Add Oil to Your Nightly Routine-Yes Oil!

For whatever reason, your skin is over producing oil.  By finding a light, easily absorbed oil, your skin will most likely get the memo that it does not need to keep producing oil!

Oils to consider:

  • Jojoba Oil
  • Tamanu Oil
  • Hazelnut Oil

My current process is applying my Blemish Roll On on problem areas then I apply 5 drops of Jojoba Oil.  Inflammation has been a real issue for me and this process has helped make my skin look much better.

In the morning, I use an oil fee moisturizer.  I find this does not add to the issue of excess oil and shine under my make up but still gives the hydration oily skin truly needs.  Again, I am using Juice Beauty’s Oil Free Moisturizer with SPF 30.  I love it!  My skin drinks it up!  It’s clean and light and works well under make up, plus the SPF is great!

3.Use Essential Oil to Combat Bacteria and Inflammation

Essential oils can be very helpful to help balance the skin and kill bacteria that is associated with clogged pores.  As mentioned above-I use my roll-on to help combat bacteria and inflammation.  You could simply make a serum, adding the oils directly to your oil of choice.  For a 1 ounce glass dropper bottle, I would add 15 drops of essential oil.  Use 3-5 drops of your new homemade serum on your skin nightly.

Essential Oils to Consider:

  • Ylang Ylang
  • Lavender
  • Tea Tree
  • Lemongrass
  • All Citrus Oils (use these only in the evening-they could cause photo sensitivity)

Tips for Controlling Breakouts-

  1. Change your pillowcase often.
  2. Wash your towels daily.
  3. Do not touch your face!
  4. Do not pick or squeeze zits that aren’t busting at the seams (if you know what I mean!) By pressing and squeezing, you could push the bacteria and puss into other parts of the skin and multiply your breakouts.
  5. Avoid blotting papers-While they do a good job at sopping up oil, they often press bacterial futher into the pores.
  6. Avoid make up as often as possible.
  7. Using clay based masks will help pull oil and impurities out of the pores-this is what we want but always remember to replenish with your facial oil or moisturizer afterwards.

I hope I’ve shed some light on the oily skin type!  Even though, my skin looks pretty bad right now, I’m glad to have experienced it again so I could get some major inspiration on healthy solutions!
