You might not know this, but exfoliating your lips can make a big difference in the appearance of your lips! A DIY lip scrub is easy to make and incredibly effective at plumping and smoothing your lips so that lip products look smooth, even and luscious!

Most of us are in pursuit of BIG LIPS. Most of us, myself included, are not in the market to get lip injections-plus it really goes against this whole making your own homemade beauty products thing.

Luckily there are alternatives that are natural and easy to do to get that bee stung look! One in particular is exfoliating your lips on a regular basis.  Keep reading for a quick and easy tutorial on making your own plumping cinnamon DIY lip scrub!

Why Use A Lip Scrub?

Lip scrubs are often overlooked in the beauty product world but they are such an incredible beauty tool you should be using on a regular basis.

While lips are not the window to your soul, they are a prominent part of your face! The smoother and healthier your lips look, the more radiant your overall face is!

Plus, no one likes to put on lipstick over chapped, flakey lips. That’s the worst! Many underestimate how moisturizing lip scrub can be! Cold weather can wreak havoc on the lips and regular lip exfoliation can help your lip balms and lipsticks penetrate deeper for uber nourishment and relief!

Why Not Just Buy A Lip Scrub?

Well, you absolutely can. I’ve researched dozens of different lip scrubs most of which were totally natural and contained only natural, simple ingredients. They also sported a hefty cost as well. There are some that have a few questionable additives such as citric acid, fragrance and food coloring. Basically I found that natural lip scrubs were easy to find, but for me, a lip scrub is such a simple product to make.

You can make a fresh, small batch each time you use it or you can make a larger batch to have on hand when you need it. You can customize natural lip scrub recipes depending on the products you have on hand, the time you’d like to spend and the individual needs of the delicate skin of your lips!

Ingredients for a DIY Lip Scrub

Making your own homemade lip scrub requires at least 2 ingredients-an emollient and an exfoliant.

Nourishing Oils: In this recipe I chose to use coconut oil because it is high in lauric acid which makes it high in antimicrobial, anti fungal and anti viral activity. Since lip products are used around the mouth, lauric acid can be a smart choice.

I added vitamin E oil because it has major antioxidant properties which help kill age causing free radicals. Plus, vitamin E can help prolong the shelf life of products!

However, if you don’t have coconut oil, you can use jojoba oil, almond oil, olive oil, apricot seed oil, castor oil, etc. Nourishing plant oils are going to add moisture to your skin no matter which you choose.

Shea butter or cocoa butter is also an option for extremely dry skin but you would need to melt it first.

Some people simply add an exfoliant (like sugar) to vaseline. However, petroleum jelly is not a natural option. If you have made your own vaseline, this would be an excellent base to add an exfoliant to.

Oils are the nourishing agent in this recipe and are full of essential fatty acids which help hydrate skin.

Exfoliants: I used plain ole’ white cane sugar in my recipe because I wanted to stick with simple ingredients that are easy to find but you could use sea salt, coconut sugar, coffee grounds or brown sugar.

For a more gentle scrub, you can nix the sugar or salt and use cocoa powder or even ground oatmeal which will be more suited to sensitive skin.

Other Additives: Cinnamon essential oil is used in my recipe for lip plumping. Before you add it, you should know that cinnamon oil can make your lips tingle and even burn just a bit if you are super sensitive. Peppermint oil or lavender oil are also great essential oil alternatives. I like adding essential oils because they are anti bacterial and smell amazing!

Raw honey is a great additive as well. It is extremely calming and healing.

You could also add lemon juice for added exfoliation. I added it to my sugar scrub recipe for the body because it leaves skin so incredibly soft. Go easy though because lemon can add to more irritation. I would not use cinnamon essential oil and lemon together. It’s too much.

Why Lip Scrubs Plump the Lips:

By scrubbing your lips with sugar you are revving up blood flow. Anywhere blood rushes to, the skin will swell.

Removing dead skin will smooth out your lips, giving your lips a plumped up appearance. By using a moisturizing oil as the base for our scrub, we will also be nourishing the skin. When skin is well hydrated it will appear more smooth and plump.

Finally, by adding a bit of cinnamon, your lips will become irritated-our body’s natural reaction to irritation is to become inflamed. That’s why lip plumpers burn.

I must mention this lip scrub tastes amazing! Definitely a sweet treat! I paired it with my DIY Bubble Gum Lip Oil!

Materials

  • 2 TBSP. Coconut Oil
  • 1 TBSP. sugar
  • 1 tsp. Vitamin E Oil
  • 2 drops Cinnamon Essential Oil

Tools

  • Small Bowl
  • Spoon
  • 2 ounce Glass Jar

Instructions

    1. Add coconut oil to a small bowl
    2. Mix in sugar, vitamin E & cinnamon essential oil
    3. Transfer to a 2 ounce container.

Notes

  • This lip scrub will last about 3-6 months in an air tight jar. Be very careful not to dip wet fingers into your lip scrub. The water will contaminate your lip scrub within weeks. No one wants to rub bacteria all over their lips!!
  • Once this lip scrub settles after you've stirred and scooped, it will be a solid consistency. This is thanks to the coconut oil. If it is too hard, take a spoon and remix. If you choose to use a liquid oil, your lip scrub will be more pliable.

How to Use a DIY Lip Scrub:

  1. Remove makeup and cleanse the skin first.
  2. Scoop a dime sized amount into your fingertips and gently rub over your lips in a circular motion for 1-2 minutes.
  3. Rinse excess scrub off your lips with warm water.
  4. Wash your hands afterwards, cinnamon will burn if you rub your eyes.
  5. Follow up with a good lip balm like my basic peppermint lip balm recipe or my coQ10 lip treatment recipe.

How Often Should You Use A Lip Scrub?

A DIY lip scrub can be used once or twice a week. Easy does it. The skin on the lips is delicate and could easily become too irritated.
