Improve Indoor Air Quality with Plants!

Improve Air Quality with Plants
Ever since I moved out of my parents house when I was 18, I have filled my living spaces with as many plants as I had windows.  There’s just something about living amongst other living things.  And by living things I don’t mean roommates or husbands.  I’m talking, living things that don’t talk back and that only contribute to the beauty of a home.  I’m including cats in this too btw.  Do I sound like a crazy plant/cat lady or what?!  A while ago I heard plants could act as air filters and improve the quality of indoor air.  Ever since then I’ve been wanting to research the benefits of having indoor plants and since spring is around the corner, now seems like a good time!

Turns out, plants do an amazing job of purifying the air.  This isn’t just mumbo jumbo either! This information comes from a study done by NASA in the 1980’s.  The NASA Clean Air Study showed that certain plants were great for filtering indoor air pollution.

First off, did you know that indoor air can be polluted?  Unfortunately indoor air can be very detrimental and can cause illness and long term health issues.  The air in our homes can become polluted because of toxic chemicals in our flooring, paint, appliances and even furniture! Pollutants like benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and xylene can be found in homes and can wreak havoc on our family’s health!

On top of purifying the air, plants can also help raise humidity levels indoors, especially larger leafed plants.  This can be so helpful in the winter when heaters and fireplaces can transform the air into a desert like atmosphere.

Not only do plants have health benefits, they also are proven to elevate mood and improve productivity!  This is why so many offices incorporate plants in their decor!

Benefits of Indoor Plants:

Plants and air purification

After doing research on the benefits of plants, I’m so inspired to add more to my collection!  Who knew plants could detox the air?!  I’ve become very aware that household items like furniture, floors, paints even cleaning and beauty products are polluting our indoor air.  With so much focus on eating healthy and using natural products, the air we breath easily gets overlooked.  While the best solution is to choose non toxic items for our homes, they can be difficult to source and hugely expensive.  For now, taking every opportunity to open windows and adding plants to decor is an easy way to detox!
