Making a “before you go” homemade poo-pourri spray is the most effective way to prevent unpleasant odors from leaving the toilet.

Yeah, I’m going there. Sorry, not sorry. I did just get married and we’re all figuring out how to be as discreet as humanly possible in a home where humans outnumber toilets 2-1. I say “we’re all” but I really mean just him and I. My girls are still going to the bathroom with the door wide open and at that age where every bodily function is something to broadcast and be proud of. There is no such thing as embarrassing odors.

So my new husband moved in with this spray called Poo-Pourri. Apparently I’ve been living under a rock because I had no idea what it was and how it worked. I quickly jumped on the poo-pourri bandwagon and would like to shake the hand of the GENIUS who figured this one out! Not only is this product hugely effective, it is safe and natural to boot!

What is Poo Pourri?

If there’s anyone out there that doesn’t know what Poo-pourri is, let me explain this magical invention to you. First off, bathroom deodorizer sprays are just not an option. The HUGE amount of harsh chemicals in those products can be detrimental to our health and definitely should be avoided. To learn more read HERE.

Back to Poo-pourri-The concept is that you spray the liquid on top of the water before you go. The liquid creates an oil barrier on the surface of the water and will trap odors under the water. Sounded a bit ridiculous to me the first time it was explained but I was pleasantly surprised to find how well the original poo pourri spray works.

DIY Poo-pourriI can’t take any credit for this recipe. Once I knew I needed to recreate this product, I took to Pinterest! There were tons of DIY Poo Pourri recipes. All with the common elements of alcohol, glycerin and pure essential oils. A few had the genius add on of blue food dye which is not necessary for it to work but great for being able to see that you have covered the surface of the water with your spray! From Pinterest, I formulated a great recipe that works just as well as the original product!

Alternative Essential Oil Options:

I chose essential oils according to what the original product smells like but you could use any essential oils you like, just keep it at 25 drops. 10 drops of lavender, 10 drops of tea tree and 5 drops of lemon essential oils is a great scent combination as well. Honestly, any combo of essential oils is 10 times better than a poopy bathroom smell.

I like to get my essential oils at Plant Therapy. They offer free shipping on all orders and have organic yet affordable oils.

It is also a great idea traveling with a bottle. Lord knows sharing a hotel room with someone even if it is your family can be a tricky situation.

Making a poo pourri spray for the guest bathroom would also be a nice touch for your guests.

TMI? I hope not. Everyone poops but not everyone needs to smell it. Make this diy Poo Pourri and teach your spouse and kids to use it and thank me later!
