A DIY to Try: Bug Repellent Cubes

DIY Bug Repellent Cubes

I’m starting a new series called A DIY to Try.  I’m always getting new DIYs popping up on my Pinterest feed that I want to try so I was thinking we should start trying other’s skin care/home DIYs and I’ll let you know if it’s a must make!

First up comes from one of my favorite blogs, Hello Glow.  I have THIS book and THIS book from Hello Glow and I LOVE them.  I highly recommend them if you’re into DIY skin care!  This recipe came from one of the books rather then the website.  I think these  bug repellent cubes are genius and living in Oklahoma, I’m always looking for natural ways to ward off bugs. This DIY is a simple concept.  They are made of beeswax and oil and a ton of bug repelling essential oils.  You’ll need an oil warmer like THIS in order for this DIY to work.

First off, let’s get the DEET issue out of the way.  I don’t recommend using it.  There are way too many side effects that are quite frankly, scary.  I know there are certain diseases that come with bug bites that would be way worse then deet but using deet on a regular basis is a very bad idea.  Go HERE to read more. Go HERE and HERE for my other bug related recipes!!  A spray is an absolute must if you live in a buggy place! Bug Repellent Cubes

DIY Bug Repellent Cubes

1/4 cup beeswax (find it HERE)

2 tbsp. coconut oil (find it HERE)

15 drops citronella essential oil (find it HERE)

15 drops peppermint essential oil (find it HERE)

15 drops lemongrass essential oil (find it HERE)

Directions:

  1. Creat a double boiler by filling a medium sauce pan 1/2 way full with water.
  2. Place on the stove top and turn on to medium heat.
  3. Place a glass pyrex cup in the water and add beeswax and coconut oil.
  4. Once thoroughly melted, remove from heat and add essential oils.
  5. Pour into ice cube trays and place in the fridge.
  6. Once thoroughly hardened, pop out of trays and use!!

Would I make these cubes again?  Probably not.  Because there is so much beeswax, I felt like it masked the bug repelling scent of the essential oils. I added extra compared to the original recipe and still had a hard time smelling the bug repelling oils.  I would rather diffuse outside or make a Bug Repellent Spray to spray directly on the skin.  Also, I think candles, homemade or store bought keep mosquitos away more obviously then these cubes.  Go HERE for my beeswax citronella candle recipe. However, it doesn’t take away to how ingenious they are and I’m thinking of making more that just smell good to burn inside!

Leave me a comment if you have a DIY you’d like me to try and post about!!!  Or leave me suggestions on a DIY you’d like to see in the future!!

xx, Jenni
