Whether you have dry skin, sensitive skin or oily skin, this homemade face serum is excellent for any skin type.

Oil vs. Water:

I love using oils on my skin. No matter if it’s in the dead of summer or middle of winter I will probably never go back to a face lotion. Lotions contain a shockingly large amount of water as well as other ingredients that make it possible to combine oil and water. While water is great for your skin and can act as a vehicle to transport oil deeper into your pores, I would rather use a water based serum and/or toner and then apply an oil based serum/face oil to get the maximum benefits of mother nature. There are so many reasons to give up the face cream!

What is a Face Serum?

Facial serums can be a game changer in your skin care routine. They can be water based or oil based. Facial serums contain highly concentrated ingredients that address a particular skin care concern and boost the effects of your other skin care products.

How to Use a Serum:

For best results, serums should be used after cleansing and toning but before moisturizing. However, depending on the ingredients, you might be able to nix the moisturizer if your face serum is oil based or delivers enough hydration. I recommend to always use an oil based face oil on top of a water based serum in order to help the skin absorb both products deeply. With this DIY face serum recipe though, you do not need an extra moisturizer since all the ingredients are oil based.

Face serums can be used morning and night depending on the individual product or what you prefer. For example, my DIY wrinkle defense hyaluronic acid serum is always used in the morning because the hyaluronic acid has an instant plumping effect but I also love to apply it in the evening after oil cleansing.

Because face serums are so concentrated, you only need to use 1-5 drops at a time. Skin serums can have a hefty price tag but luckily, 1 bottle should last quite some time.

The Difference Between a DIY Serum & a DIY Face Oil

I’m going to bottom line you-there is no difference between an oil based serum and a face oil in the DIY world or even the over the counter world. I called this DIY a serum because it is full of powerful anti-aging ingredients to boost your skin health. I do not recommend using a face oil on top of this serum because it would be redundant.

DIY Face Serum Ingredients:

Organic Rosehip Seed Oil penetrates deeply into the lower layers of the skin. It regenerates cells and increases collagen production. Rosehip is rich in vitamin C, essential fatty acids and retinoic acid, which studies have shown it brightens and tightens skin! Rosehip seed oil also helps restore skin’s elasticity, fade age spots, reduce broken capillaries, and balance oil glands.

Camelina Oil is HIGH in fatty acids and Vitamin E making it very effective against psoriasis and eczema. It has a good reputation in anti aging facial products and an even better reputation for rejuvenating the hair!

Moringa oil contains a plant hormone called cytokinin that helps cellular growth as well as protects skin cells. This oil also contains a good amount of vitamin C which we know helps boost collagen. It has a high concentration of behenic acid which has been known to be an anti aging tool due to it’s powerful conditioning properties!

Squalane is an amazing ingredient. It has many skin benefits! Squalane actually belongs to the oil family and does not mix with water. Squalane has been helpful in balancing oil production. It revs up circulation, softens rough skin and hydrates the skin. What I love about it is that it penetrates the skin deeply and helps regenerate skin cells and has been known to boost collagen.

Cypress Essential Oil is a powerful firming oil. It improves circulation, strengthens blood capillaries, is antibacterial, anti-infectious, and anti-microbial. Cypress oil is amazing for varicose veins and broken capillaries. I love it in my rose hydrating spray recipe.

Copaiba Essential Oil has been called the highest anti inflammatory substance known. That’s a huge claim. What that translates is it can reduce puffiness as well as fight free radicals. It also has been known to regenerate collagen and is extremely healing.

Lavender Essential Oil is a simple oil that I’ve added to help calm the skin. Plus, it smells so good with the other oils in this DIY serum.

Geranium Essential Oil is my favorite essential oil for the skin. When in doubt-add Geranium. Geranium is great for regenerating skin and revving up circulation. It is extremely healing. It also promotes even distribution of melanin-which helps even out the overall tone of the skin.

Skin Serum Recipe Substitutions:

Typically I give you a long list of carrier oils and essential oils that you can use instead of what I have listed. This particular recipe has curated, high quality oils that I believe make this homemade serum effective and unique.

However, if you are missing 1 or more of the oils and since this is a recipe that calls for quite a few, I have a few oils that I love for anti aging that would work well in place of one or more of my chosen ingredients.

Argan oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil, pomegranate seed oil, and marula oil are all great substitutes. Sweet almond oil, coconut oil, grapeseed oil and castor oil are not recommended.

My essential oil blend is specifically formulated for mature skin but carrot seed oil, rose oil as well as roman chamomile essential oil are also great active ingredients. If you have combination skin I would recommend tea tree, ylang ylang and lavender essential oils.

**If you have acne-prone skin, omit moringa oil all together. Hazelnut, sacha inchi or jojoba are much better choices.

    DIY Skin Tightening Serum

This DIY face serum recipe is one of my favorites. I have made it more than twice and that says a lot since I have quite a few other DIY serum recipes! I love that it is full of effective yet completely natural oils that will deliver a large amount of undiluted nutrition to your skin.

Remember, your DIY face serum is only as good as the quality of your ingredients. I like to buy my carrier oils from Mountain Rose Herbs because I trust their quality. I know it’s tempting to shop on Amazon but time and time again I’ve noticed the quality and consistency is not dependable. Mountain Rose Herbs has excellent essential oils and I’ve tried many. However, I also love Plant Therapy essential oils as well.
