Homemade Raspberry Lip Balm

If you’ve come for the perfect summer lip balm, I’ve got you covered! My recipe for a homemade raspberry lip balm is creamy, nourishing and tastes and smells so good!

I’ve really been enjoying experimenting with some “out of the ordinary” DIYs!!  I’ve done a couple of tinted lip balms using either lip stick or mica powder but neither coloring ingredient I enjoy using.  Cosmetic grade mica is hard to find and proper sourcing can be controversial and lipstick, if it’s natural, is just to0 expensive to break off and throw in a pot!

I’ve wanted to play with using food in my DIYs but I have yet to buy a food dehydrator.  Well, come to find out, Trader Joe’s has the most wonderful freeze dried fruits!  And don’t fret-if you’re like me and you don’t have a Trader Joe’s in your city, Amazon has got you covered!

The Lovely Benefits of Raspberries!

Raspberries are loaded with antioxidants like vitamin C and polyphenols. These antioxidants in raspberries help protect your skin from damaging free radicals which lead to premature aging.

These same antioxidants also help protect the skin from the premature aging and cancer which can come from too much prolonged exposure to the sun.

Vitamin E, magnesium, lutein and beta carotene are more antioxidants that are found in raspberries! Raspberries also rich in flavonoids, which are natural substances that act like antioxidants.

As you can see, raspberries are quite the super food to ingest so why not add them to our skin care?

Homemade Raspberry Lip Balm

Homemade Raspberry Lip Balm Ingredients:

Coconut Oil is the moisturizing component of this DIY lip balm recipe. Coconut oil is not all that moisturizing but I love it for it’s healing properties and in the warmer months when lips aren’t as depleted as they are in colder months, it is enough for a light rejuvenation!

Freeze Dried Raspberries add a tart taste to your lip balm.  They add a very subtle color to your balm and create a gorgeous product, perfect for gifts!  They do add a smell that is so light and fresh-my balm reminds me of my mother’s raspberry muffins!

Beeswax hardens and emulsifies the balm and adds a layer of protection while sealing in moisture. I will say, using a white beeswax makes this project even prettier.  I usually only buy yellow because it is hard to determine exactly how the beeswax got white.  It possibly is white because it has been refined and getting a whiter white can be achieved by laying the beeswax in daylight but it’s hard to determine whether a beeswax retailer is properly treating their beeswax or just bleaching.

I decided to add lemon essential oil to this balm and I’m so glad I did. I love to smell like lemon and when paired with the tangy sweet smell of raspberry, it’s perfection! I had originally added vanilla oleoresin essential oil the first time I made it and it pairs beautifully with the raspberry as well.

In my experimenting I worked on a diy lip gloss and a diy lip balm.  I also played around with different consistencies by continuing to stir my lip balm as it cooled.  This created a Vaseline like consistency.

Freeze Dried Raspberry Trouble Shooting:

Working with freeze fried fruit that has tiny seeds like raspberries proved to be a challenge.  After much thinking and playing, I found that putting the raspberries in a coffee grinder works best.  My first batch, I hand smashed the raspberries leaving chunks of seeds in my balm, not good.  Plus it scratches your lips.

Another option that will definitely take more time but leave you with a smoother lip balm is to infuse your balm with crushed raspberry. If you are interested in this method, I have written a detailed post on how to infuse herbs, spices and even coffee into carrier oils.

I want to try using freeze dried blueberries next-I think it would make a pretty balm plus there are no seeds! I’ll keep you posted on if it turns my lips blue-lol!

DIY Lip Gloss

This was such a fun project-I love working with fruit and this has really inspired me to buy a food dehydrator for more projects!!

Give this a go-and just know, a coffee grinder is absolutely necessary unless you can find a strainer that is small enough to catch those seeds!  Oh and if you use your regular coffee grinder, this was very easy to clean.

Enjoy your new summer homemade lip balm that’s light, fruity and completely nature made!

xx, Jenni
