DIY Cleansing Oil Anti Aging Non Comedogenic

Cleansing the skin properly is one of the most important components of a successful beauty routine. Over cleansing is a common faux pas many of us are guilty of. Cleansing the skin with a harsh product can wreak havoc causing the skin to become terribly out of balance. Oil cleansing is a simple way to effectively detox and balance your skin and today I’m sharing with you a new recipe for a DIY oil cleanser that contains only non-comedogenic oils.

When I mention over cleansing, I mean using a soap based cleanser that is too harsh for the skin. It strips the skin of it’s protective barrier and sends the message to the skin to over produce oil. Blemishes, irritation and bumpy texture can result. If this rings a bell, it might be time to try oil cleansing.

Using a cleanser that does not contain soap guarantees that stripping the skin will not happen. Oil cleansing can be incredibly effective when done properly because oil dissolves oil and with the help of hot water and steam, the pores naturally open and purge.

How to Oil Cleanse Properly:

In order to oil cleanse properly, you must choose the right oils for your skin. This DIY oil cleanser is perfect for all skin types, especially oily/blemished skin because I am using only oils that have a low comedogenic score, meaning they have little to no chance of clogging your pores.

Beauty Tip: While coconut oil has many uses and attributes, it has a comedogenic score of 4 meaning it will likely clog your pores. I don’t recommend using coconut oil on your face. Coconut oil is also not a very moisturizing oil and does little to replenish dry skin.

In my post, Troubleshooting the Oil Cleansing Method, I discuss how to avoid mistakes in oil cleansing.

What is the Comedogenic Scale?

The comedogenic scale ranks oils and butters on a scale from 0-5 determining whether an oil will clog your skin and cause a breakout. 0 being the safest, least likely and 5 being most likely.

Because an oil ranks a 3 or above does not mean everyone must avoid it. If you do not experience breakouts and are dry, you might choose a more emollient oil with a higher score to improve the moisture content of your skin.

  • 0 – won’t clog pores
  • 1 – very low probability
  • 2 – moderately low probability
  • 3 – moderate probability
  • 4 – fairly high probability
  • 5 – high probability

DIY Oil Cleanser Anti Aging Ingredients:

  • Hemp Seed Oil is considered a “cleansing oil”. Typically I use castor oil in my cleansing balms and oils but hemp seed has a comedogenic score of 0 and is more friendly to blemish prone skin. It is light and does not sit on top of the skin.
  • Shea Nut Oil comes from the shea nut where we get the more commonly known, shea butter. Interestingly enough, it has a score of 0-2. It is a fantastic oil because it is incredibly thorough when it comes to replenishing the skin.
  • Sacha Inchi has become one of my favorite oils. It is high in linoleic acid which is very balancing and healing for acne prone skin. It scores a 0-1 on the comedogenic scale.
  • Hazelnut oil is the perfect balancing oil for oily skin types.  It also helps reduce pore size!  It’s hydrating, gentle and rejuvenating.  It has a high antioxidant content and is antibacterial.  It is a quick absorbing oil. It scores a 1 on the comedogenic scale.
  • I chose a blend of lavender, patchouli and geranium because they are my favorite go-to essential oils for anti aging. Geranium is especially helpful for aging skin.

Notes

How to Oil Cleanse:

Pour or scoop a quarter size amount of oil into your palm and begin massaging your skin.  Massage gently for up to 2 minutes.  I usually don’t get 2 minutes in, but 1 will work just fine.  While you are massaging, turn your water on HOT.

Wet a soft wash cloth with very hot water and lay the wash cloth over your skin.  Press it into your skin until it cools down.

Repeat step 2 1-2 more times.

Tips & Troubleshooting:
Be careful not to burn your skin but keep in mind, wet heat opens the pores helping them release sebum and dirt. The oil cleansing method does not work without the heat.

Baby washcloths are great for oil cleansing. A regular washcloth is often too harsh.

Be sure to have several washcloths ready to go. You should not use 1 cloth all week. It can breed loads of bacteria and have the opposite of effect that you want!

Where to Find Ingredients:

The oils I have chosen for this DIY cleansing oil are all from Mountain Rose Herbs. I have tried to find these oils on Amazon but have had no luck with quality. Plus, Mountain Rose Herb’s prices on these particular oils are very affordable compared to less quality on Amazon! The downside to Mountain Rose Herbs is the shipping but I truly believe they are worth the wait. After all, what’s the point in making your own skin care if your ingredients aren’t high quality?

Non Comedogenic DIY Cleansing Oil

This DIY cleansing oil is the perfect cleanser for many skin types. Oily skin types that need anti aging power will benefit the most. However, dry skin to acne prone skin can benefit from this oil cleanser as well.

And as a bonus-I’ve mentioned that I make several DIYs at the same time, photograph them, use them for a while then determine if they’re worth sharing. This DIY I made a month ago and I actually took it on vacation and used it to oil cleanse, as a face oil and to smooth my hair! It definitely can be used for many things. I like using it as a face oil because it penetrates the skin quickly.
