We’ve been talking smoothies a lot lately! I think everyone could benefit from adding one to their daily diet and the more nutrition the better, right? I posted THIS post about how to add flaxseed, chia seed, bee pollen and hemp hearts in 5 seconds flat which saves a ton of effort and time but I wanted to share one more trick I do that saves even more minutes.
We all know how nutritious unrefined coconut oil is for the inside and outside of the body so why not add it to your smoothie? The problem is, you have to open the jar, scoop it up and scrape it off your spoon (usually with a finger). You’ve dirtied a spoon and taken at least a minute to get your oil in the blender. If this is your worst annoyance of the day then you’re way ahead of most of us but my little trick can at least make one thing easier!
Benefits of Coconut Oil In A Smoothie:
- High in healthy fats (medium chain fatty acids) which give you energy rather then store as fat
- Anti-bacterial
- Anti-viral
- Anti-parasite
- Anti-fungal
- Highly Alkaline which purifies the blood
- Helps regulate blood sugar
- Metabolic stimulator
- Raises good cholesterol while lowering bad cholesterol
- Naturally raises energy
As you can see, coconut oil is an awesome additive to your smoothie. The benefits are endless. I saw a Facebook post recently that said, “I got 99 problems and coconut oil solved 89”. So funny, yet so true!
You can probably tell what I’m about to explain by the pictures but I’ll give instructions anyway-details are my thing.
Directions:
- Create a double boiler by filling a medium sized pot 1/2 way full of water.
- Place your jar of coconut oil into the pot-lid on.
- Turn your stove top on medium and allow your coconut oil to liquefy.
- Transfer oil to a condiment bottle like THIS. You might need a funnel.
- Using ice cube trays or candy molds, squirt coconut oil into your tray.
- Allow to harden if you’ve used a candy mold (they are super flimsy) and place in the fridge for several hours.
- Once coconut oil is thoroughly cold and hard, pop them out of the molds or ice tray.
- Store in a glass jar in the fridge.
- Use one coconut oil serving per smoothie!
**You will need to blend just a bit longer to make sure there are no chunks of coconut oil. There’s nothing grosser (at least to me) to chew your coconut oil! And so you know, I have a Vita Mix which is a high powered blender. I’ve not tried this method in a regular blender. I can’t imagine that it wouldn’t work-it’s not like the coconut portions are frozen. If it ends up not working, the coconut oil can be remelted and can return to it’s regular jar to be used as usual. **
THESE are the candy molds I used and they measure exactly 1 tbsp which is how much I use in 1 smoothie. Typical ice trays are a bit more then 1 tbsp. and I would only fill them half way to get your serving size right unless you prefer extra coconut oil in your smoothie.
I hope this was helpful! It has saved me tons of time and made smoothie drinking a no-brainer. I always have time now that I’ve cut back on the usual way to add coconut oil to a smoothie!
I always get my coconut oil from Healthy Traditions (formerly Tropical Traditions). I believe they offer the absolute best quality of coconut oil. Find them HERE.

P.S. I now use coconut oil in my morning coffee. I have ditched creamer and use a tablespoon of coconut oil instead. My coffee must be blended with coconut oil so it will mix properly and get frothy and creamy. You’d be shocked at how good it is!
