Why Make a DIY Coffee Scrub?
Making your own coffee scrub is not only easy, it’s a cheap DIY that will save you loads if you’re thinking of buying a store bought scrub. With only natural ingredients, you’ll avoid sneaky ingredients that tend to be in scrubs. Plus, this coffee scrub makes your shower smell like a coffee shop which is one of the best ways to wake up in the morning!
Did you know coffee wasn’t just for waking your brain up? When caffeine is used topically, it not only revs up circulation, it also has the ability to encourage excess water out of the top layers of skin. Plus, it’s granular texture is the perfect base for a homemade scrub. Caffeine penetrates deeply into the skin and studies have shown that it prevents excessive accumulation of fat in cells.
What is Cellulite?
While many people believe that cellulite is caused by excess fat, this is just not the case. While excess fat can contribute to cellulite there are other factors that cause the skin to have a dimpled appearance. The most common cause of cellulite is simply water retention. You might be interested to read my remedies for water bloat. When fat cells hold onto water it can cause a bumpy texture on the surface of your skin.
You might be wondering if caffeine can even be absorbed through the skin and in my research I did find this answer to be a BIG YES-in fact, there is or was an actual caffeine patch much like a nicotine patch!
Possible causes of Cellulite
- Genetics-Some skin types can be more prone to cellulite and that typically runs in the family.
- Consuming too much processed food-processed food should be avoided whenever possible. The amount of unnatural ingredients can wreak havoc on your overall health.
- Water Retention can be caused by eating too much processed salt and can also be quite common during PMS.
- Hormone Imbalance (estrogen dominant) Having too much estrogen can cause chronic water retention and bloat leading to the appearance of cellulite.
- Lack of exercise-Improving muscle tone can make a big difference in the appearance of skin.
- Not drinking enough water-Dehydration can cause you to retain water. Also, dehydrated skin is more prone to cellulite.

DIY Coffee Scrub Ingredients:
Coffee beans are of course the main ingredient but I also wanted to add an extra bit of exfoliation. I chose to use sea salt over sugar because sea salt can be detoxifying plus it’s a boost of minerals for your skin. You could also use Pink Himalayan Salt for even more health benefits.
Sweet Almond Oil is extremely nourishing for your skin and an easy carrier oil to . You could also use organic coconut oil (or fractionated coconut oil), olive oil, apricot seed oil, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil etc.
Grapefruit Essential Oil contains large amounts of the anti-inflammatory enzyme bromelain, which helps break down cellulite. This study shows how grapefruit oil can breakdown fat formation in the skin.
Lemon Essential Oil is uplifting and cleansing while also exfoliating the skin. Lemon has strong antibacterial properties as well. If you’d prefer to use orange essential oil in place of lemon it would be a good substitute.
**Warning-I don’t recommend you use this before going out in the sun. Citrus oils can cause the skin to be extra sensitive to the sun.
Essential oils are optional. However, they add an extra boost when it comes to cellulite.

DIY Coffee Scrub
Yield: 4-10 ounces Prep Time: 5 minutes Total Time: 5 minutes
Learn how to amke a coffee scrub that will smooth and hydrate your skin instantly. Caffeine can reduce water retention as well as deliver a powerful dose of antioxidants to brighten and improve skin tone.
Materials
- 1 part Sea Salt
- 1 part Organic Coffee Grounds
- top off with Sweet Almond Oil
- 30 drops Grapefruit Essential Oil
- 10 drops Lemon Essential Oil
Tools
- 4, 6 or 10 ounce glass jar
Instructions
Making a scrub is incredibly easy. I don’t have an exact recipe because it’s just so simple.
I used equal portions of sea salt and ground coffee. I poured sweet almond oil over the mixture to get the consistency I wanted. Then I added about 30-40 drops of essential oil. I went on smell but I really wanted to add more grapefruit essential oil since it has been proven to be effective against cellulite.
Notes
You can use any airtight container. A shallow mason jar works well for this recipe. I found my 6 ounce flip top jar at Hobby Lobby.
Keeping it in a dry place is imperative to keep bacteria out. As long as you keep all moisture out of the jar, your exfoliating coffee scrub should have a shelf life of about 6 months. Products that don't contain water based ingredients last quite a long time.

How To Use a Coffee Scrub:
I prefer to use this in the bath tub before I turn the water on. You can use a brush or just your hand. Work the scrub into your skin using a circular motion. Once you have thoroughly covered your body, continue on with your shower. This scrub can be used weekly.
This scrub is fine for all skin types. However, if you have sensitive skin use caution when scrubbing. Red skin after a scrub is normal but broken skin is not.
A Few DIY Scrub Tips:
- Never use leftover coffee grounds unless you dehydrate them first! They’re wet and will cause a yucky mess, not to mention the amount of bacteria that will form will be insane!
- I would not recommend using this homemade body scrub on your face. Coffee grounds tend to be to rough and jagged.
- Go very slow on adding oil. I find that a little goes further than you think.
